The Thoughtful Chenda Chhay: DDD Grad, Entrepreneur & UN Staffer

If her grandmother hadn’t needed an operation, Chenda Chhay might have grown up as a subsistence farmer in Pursat province. Her family, after surviving the horrors of the Khmer Rouge, arrived to Phnom Penh in 1981 to see a doctor. They stayed, and their move was the first in a series of events that changed the trajectory of Chenda’s life. A year after arriving in a city still recovering from devastation, the family’s second child was born. They named her Chenda, the Khmer word for “thoughtful,” perfectly suited for a bright inquisitive baby.


Could Our Innovation Create Jobs for 780,000 Poor People?

A new report from the Rockefeller Foundation says that the model DDD pioneered–using business process outsourcing (BPO) as a means to create employment for people at the base of the pyramid–has the potential for enormous impact. The report, authored by the Monitor Group, calls the model “Impact Sourcing” and makes a strong business case for it. They argue that Impact Sourcing can provide high-quality reliable services at prices lower than what traditional providers can offer.

Announcing: Google Inc. donates $100,000 to DDD

Google Inc. made a donation of $100,000 to Digital Divide Data (DDD), the acclaimed social enterprise that delivers content business process outsourcing services to clients globally. The grant, from the Google Inc. Charitable Giving Fund, will support a major upgrade of the technology used by DDD to provide data entry, XML conversion and digital preservation services to publishers, libraries, archives, governments, academic researchers and businesses.

Announcing: Microsoft Donates $250,000 of Software to Create IT Jobs for Youth in Kenya

Microsoft Corp. announced today a donation of software with a retail value of $250,000 to Digital Divide Data (DDD). The grant, from Microsoft’s Unlimited Potential program, will support DDD to bring its social business model to Kenya. The new venture will provide services such as data entry, XML conversion and digital preservation for publishers, libraries, content hosts, academic researchers and businesses.
